INITIATIVE-John R. Wooden's Pyramid of Success #8

INITIATIVE

Today is block #8 of John R. Wooden's Pyramid of Success!

"Initiative means having the courage to make decisions and take action. Simple as that. Keep in mind that we all are going to fail at times. You must understand this and not fear failure. None of us is perfect. But if you are afraid to fail you will never do the things you are capable of doing.

If you have thoroughly prepared and are ready to give it everything you've got there is no shame if you fail - nothing to fear in failure. But fear of failure is what ofter prevents one from taking action - from using initiative.

I truly believe that failure to act- lack of initiative - is often the greatest failure of all.

A basketball team that won't risk mistakes will not outscore opponents. In fact, my great coach at Purdue, Piggy Lambert, summed it up like this: "The team that makes the most mistakes usually wins." He was talking about initiative. He understood that the overly cautious and tentative player or team, one who fears making any mistakes, will not ever score a basket or block a shot. This is true both on the court and beyond.

Use good judgement based on all available information - and then use your initiative. A mistake may occur, but if it is not because of carelessness or sloppiness, poor thinking or rash judgement it must be accepted as part of your journey to success.

The same is true everywhere in life. Initiative quickly but not carelessly or in a hurried manner. Or, as I advised those under my supervision, " Be quick, but don't hurry."
